I use a Wix filter 57002.
I use Mobil 1 5w-30 ESP because I can get it from Wal Mart and it is cheap, I buy Mann filters 5 at a time from Rock Auto.
I've been using MANN filters, Liqui Moly or Motul, whichever is on sale and has the VW spec number I need.
Mann 925/4x is the right one for a M52 & M54, ive been using exactly that for all my E36/E46 for years.

I don't recommend Fram filters. I like Wix filters for budget and Quality.
For example, a Wix XP filters out 99% of material, at 35 microns, however the standard Wix filter can filter out 95% of material at 23 microns. That means the "cheap" Wix filter captures materials that are approximately 35% smaller than the "expensive" filter.
Delco and fram filters are no different. Wix is 100% way better and a lot less when you have a commercial account
Use good oil filters too!
I just had to do $1400 in repairs to a BMW because a Chinese oil filter ripped and passed unfiltered oil through all the VANOS shit. MANN filters only.
