Mine did the same thing recently. I would turn the key and everything would light up, car would act normal, but the starter wouldn’t engage. I replaced the starter with a reman Denso unit off of RockAuto and I’ve been good to go since.

Pros: easy job to do
Vehicle: Toyota

Subaru dealer tech in Australia, here we're having lots of starter motors failure going on.

Your vehicle being a 2020 on a factory battery means the 12v battery is nearing the end of it's service life, also that means your car has an available PAK file update for the TCM module that allows extra time for engine restart.

Pros: PAK file update available
Cons: starter motors failure
Vehicle: Subaru Forester

Our 2018 just caught the whir of death tonight. 60k on the clock. Any suggestions on what brand to replace it with. Bosch and Denso both have options for the car.

I assumed my starter was going out so I replaced it with a new Denso one and it fixed the issue for maybe two weeks. After that it started to not crank first try and would take a while, now it’s almost every time I start it, it takes a while. I hear the starter spin and click every time so I assume it’s just not engaging the flywheel.

Pros: fixed issue for two weeks
Cons: issue returned, not engaging flywheel
