Strut assembly KYB or Sachs
Do yourself a big favor and don't try to tear down and rebuild the front struts just to reuse the spring. Just buy the KYB loaded struts. It's just not worth the hassle.
I put a set of KYB on my 2007 nearly a year and 11,000 miles ago, no complaints so far. They feel comfortable enough to me.
Bought KYB’s from summit racing and did the job for under $300 parts.
IMO, Sachs will restore the factory ride characteristics. I always recommend Sachs because they always seem to ride the closest to stock and have had good luck with their replacement parts.
I’ve had good results with kyb.
I just ordered the kyb loaded strut assembly and put them on all 4 sides last week and they feel great
Installed the rear leafs, beam, new KYB struts, the mk3 GTI stub axles, now just waiting on new bearings, rotors, pads, and calipers for both sides.
I’ll be honest, while it’s a massive improvement from where I was before changing them (the originals!????), I’m not a fan of the KYBs. They are SO STIFF.
Although KYB makes very good bare struts, The preassembled KYB strut plus assemblies are straight up garbage. The strut top mounts and springs that KYB uses are absolutely trash and generally fail extremely quickly, if they aren't just failed right out of the box.
I did this to my 2008 ES350 with KYB quick struts. Not a professional mechanic but proficient at changing parts. I’ve managed to save tens of thousands over the years, pretending I know what I’m doing out of my garage. Ordered the KYB, looked like this or worse.
