The PS2s have a much stiffer sidewall than the stock Goodyear F1s, which is exactly what I was looking for. No noticeable tread squirm while cornering and sharper steering response as a result. Of course, this also means they provide a less cushy ride than the F1s--the surface of the road is communicated much more readily to the cabin. The PS2s also produce quite a bit more road noise. Driving on grooved/textured highways was much noisier than the F1s. The tread pattern also produces a tendency for these tires to follow grooves in the road, which was never an issue with the F1s. In terms of overall grip, the PS2s are outstanding. I took several corners at speed in the Ozark Mountains, and the PS2s showed no signs of letting go. Very confidence-inspiring. They're easily as grippy as the F1s, and actually felt as though they were superior in this regard. Wet weather performance was easily as good as the F1s, much to my pleasant surprise. I drove in conditions that varied from a light sprinkle to a heavy downpour, and the PS2s continued to perform as solidly as they did in the dry. I plowed through several puddles with not even a hint of hydroplaning.
We have Michelins on our 02 and Continentals on our 03. Performance wise (both wet, dry, snow & ice) they are pretty close to equals. We just don't have enough miles to compare wear yet.
Michelin's came with my car and I have no complaints about them. They handle well in both dry and wet weather and I like the ride I get from them
i use pilot alpins! arctic alpins were not too sporty...... especially when wet, so i went with pilots. pretty good tyres in my opinion but not the cheapest.
I have Michelin Arctic Alpines on the 2002 Jetta aswell as the Rabbit. Really good tires in my opinion.
I pulled a 2.19 on the stock 195/65-15 Micheline MXV4s.... and I don't I can do better with a few more practice runs.
I don't know about the Dunlops, but my fiance's Protege had a set of Pilot Alpins last winter, and they worked nicely. Dry handling was also very very good. I'm sure they don't give as much grip as a lower-speed rated tire, but they were still very safe and very stable in the snow.
A friend of mine who lives outside of Chelsea, MI has a Saturn SC2 that rides on Pilot Alpins in the winter. He says those tires are pretty darned good and perfect for the kind of snow that falls around Ann Arbor
I've got Michelin Pilot XGT H4s on my 'roc... They're holding up reqally well, they're three years old now and still have lots of tread left on them, they're awesome in the rain too which is a good thing 'cos I live in Raincouver
The car still has the stock Michelin MXV4 Plus 205/55 16H tires. I do not dispute that true snow tires outperform them. These tires suffice for both good and bad weather until one obtains more specialized sets for the seasons one encounters in their area. I plan on getting 17x8 wheels with Kumho 712s for the summer, and going with these for the winter until they wear out. Regardless, 4Mo provides superior safety and handling in any situation.
