Water pump Hepu or OEM Volkswagen
Metal impeller model is available but can be hard to find (Hepu brand). Recommended interval for changing is 80-100K depending on who you talk to. But many fail earlier and may fail as early as 20k. Change as preventive maintenance.
The waterpump in my kit from germanautoparts.com was made by Hepu.
I have the Hepu unit in my car. It's been going great for the past 45k miles. Both are good options. I would go with what is cheapest.
my water pump went at 80K (KM)'s (got it towed to georgetown VW) and when i got my OEM replacement it was metal... compared to the plastic one they took out... Saw it touched it... (they showed me the old plastic one) i thought it was weird and they said in 2002 and after they have metal water pumps... before that it was "plastic"? anyways its in and i have a metal one... and i got it from a VW dealer... OEM part...
i bought the dieselgeek timing belt kit which includes the Behr german Thermostat and Hepu water pump. he says that the stock OE style thermostat is better and the reman OE pump (which now uses metal impellors) is better than the hepu.
I've a 2012 GTI with just over 9K miles on it that had a water pump leak on me yesterday. Took to dealer and got it back this afternoon. I live 2 miles from the dealer and drove home no problem. On the way to my parents 40th wedding anniversary dinner this evening no more than another 2 miles after I left home it had another major leak happen. The coolant reservoir had completely cracked and I had coolant all over my engine compartment.
went in for my 20k maintenance/service on my 2011 GTI, Waterpump was shot, replaced free of charge but leaves me worried...
My water pump just needed replacement as well. I didn't have any visible or audible signs besides the low coolant level alert. The dealer said that this has been a fairly common issue but there is still no recall.
Just got a call from the dealer. Water pump is leaking coolant.
My 2012 GTI, with only 10.000 miles started leaking coolant, turns out the water pump is bad, it is now sitting at the dealer waiting for the part.
