Windshield OEM BMW or OEM Subaru
I just put a windshield in my 2023 outback it cost me $1,250 from Subaru with calibration Safelite wanted $1,300 with calibration
Safelight with Subaru OEM glass cost me $640. No issues 18 months later.
Note, I've replaced it with OEM glass, the installer said something from BMW that's the issue, they don't use enough silicon to give the windshield some flex.
About to be on my third windshield in 3500 miles. First one was a pebble on the highway at 65mph, second was because some asshole drifted into the bike lane and kicked up a pebble around 45 mph. I owned a Legacy GT for 5+ years, doing the same commute as now, and only had to replace the windshield once. Outback owners filed a class action lawsuit against Subaru for their cheap glass.
2024 X5, yes same issue. Replaced due to a rock from a truck that was at least 5 - 7 car lengths ahead of me in the right lane. As soon as I got it back after full replacement it was hit again and cracked on the bottom passenger side. Hard to see since so low. The. My husband drove this past week and also endured a chip. I don’t believe the windshields on these are very durable. I’ve owned many cars/SUVs (we lease and trade regularly every 2-3 years). This has by far been the worst.
I've had my windshield crack on all three of my subarus. Last time I went in last year with my 2020, the guy at safelite told me they are prone to breakage because of the angle they're at. They said they get subs and jeeps the most because of this
As for weak glass on Subarus? Probably not exactly what you think. IIRC, Subaru has started designing their frames to include the windshield as a structural component. This allows them to have smaller A-Pilars, which have grown to be massive these days. The downside of this is that a rock strike that you would normally brush can grow as the new weak point is challenged by the frame. What causes our windshield replacement was a hit that caused a quarter-sized crack, at the start of a 10 hour road trip. I watched that crack grow to 18 inches over that trip. While thermal expansion and frost could do that on older cars, I’ve never seen a crack grow quite like that.
I’m about to replace my 5th windshield on my 2022 Outback. Subaru doesn’t acknowledge anything out of the ordinary. I’ve contacted them multiple times. No impact at all. I park in garage and next day it’s cracked. Totally normal to Subaru.
I have a 2023 BMW X3 M40i and have the exact same issue. The windshield cracked overnight after only having the car 6 months from new, no stone chip visible. Had it replaced with OEM glass and the replacement windshield cracked in the same place 4 months later. No sign of chip. Looks just like your photo.
OEM glass is dog shit. I'm on windshield number 5 in 3 years this one has lasted the longest at 7 months.
