Performed the oil and filter change this morning along with a good inspection of the top and bottom of the motor. Everything looked great, nice and clean.
Reviews of spare parts for Volkswagen Passat
Zimmerman's are good rotors. Had them for ~45K on the front of a B5.5.
I have Zimmerman's installed in the rear. They are the coat z rotors that insure the hubs don't rust. They are very good in combination with Akebono pads.
Purchased OEM VW Charcoal Lined Cabin Filter / Fresh Air Filter and OEM VW engine Air Filter for $40 from ECS Tuning. Installed at 102k miles.
So here is my experience with gaps on this engine. The wife 09 Passat was misfiring so I decide to replace the plugs. I buy Autolite double platinums which were gapped huge. Turns out the 0.032 gap was not correct after all and it should have been 0.028. Big difference, this baby flies again (GIAC tune).
I also wanted a set of foglights - again, had them in the Sonata but not here. In another stroke of luck, DBVeeDB (check out his build, it's aces) had moved on to projector fogs and sold me his stockers.
I selected the Continental ContiTech Pro Series Plus timing kit with plastic impeller (PP334LK1) from Bap Geon in Newport News, Virginia for $245 and it contains the following components: ContiTech timing belt Annex-Technik water pump with plastic impeller NTN and Schaeffler idler pulleys Litens tensioner pulley OE camshaft seal Installation instructions
The Kumho's aren't that bad in noise, until you get to the halfway point, then it starts to get noisy.
DO NOT use Mobil1 0W40 in the 2.5. I tried it and well before the oil change time, the engine sounded like a diesel with all sorts of valve train rattle.
My original timing belt assy failed at 87,0000 miles at just over 8 years. I think it might have been the tensioner failing that actually caused it. Luckily alll I had to do was pay for the timing belt replacement and VW covered the head replacement.
