I bought a VR6 4Motion wagon for my mom 4 years ago, and it's still running great. The brakes are a bit overboosted, and are very grabby, but once you get used to it, it's actually not bad at all.
Reviews of spare parts for Volkswagen Passat
I've owned my late 2007 build since new and it now has 80,000 on the clock (2.0T FSI). Only major problem was that the A/C compressor went at about 40k, but was replaced for free under warranty.
We have had our 2008 for a year and a half. It is a Komfort with 6spd manual and 2.0T. Bought it with 42k on it, currently has about 80k. Problems we have had so far are intake manifold, fuel injector cleaning, and waterpump. Overall we have been really happy with the car.
PFR6Q was equivalent to the stock Bosch plugs. They work fine.
INSIST on a VW bumper...none of that "will fit" crap!
My mecanician is now using TOTAL ( also known as ELF ) Quartz 5w30 and even gave me a discount price for the oil change. I know about the Sludge issue and is always doing is oil change at 5k with the big oil filter 51333
I too use Mobile1 0w40. Burns maybe 1/3 of a quart every 7000 miles. Not bad at all.
Went with an Optima at Wal-Mart. $100, no issues.
Apparently it's the flywheel and there's an updated part from VW. As you guys mentioned the 'hoot'/shriek/creak/grind happens when there's load, ie. having more than one passenger, going uphill, reversing, etc..
My Meyle tie rod ends lasted less than a year before both started making noises, and had torn boots.
