BFG Sport comp 2's. $112 each, great in the dry, great in the rain. TireRack loves them as do pretty much every review I read on them before I bought a set of my own.

just some feedback, stray away from bfg g-force kdw2 if you dont want noise. they handle amazing wet and dry, wearing good. BUT they have alot of road noise. not as much as my winters, but more than i would like.
In the early years (1998-99), it ran simple bolt-ons (intake, exhaust, header, no cat, software, pulleys, ac delete, LSD), but that's about it. The car did struggle on the top end grunt sometimes, but the torque was definitely there coming out of the corners...
I just picked up some fresh BFG AT Ko's and they have a 1710 lb range. but they just tear up the backroads...
Seconding BF Goodrich G-force T/A KDW2s water doesn't phase them.
I have BF Goodrich G-force T/A KDW2 on my GTI... They are FANTASTIC in the rain. I've gone miles and miles at sustained speeds of over 100mph in the rain with no problems whatsoever.
I run KDW2s on an 8" wide wheel, which are one of the widest tires you can get in a 235. Prior to doing the fender screw mod and a very light fender rolling, I'd rub fairly often on rough pavement.
generally i buy BFG or Michelin, as when i worked in a garage, they were the best wearing, least problematic, and best performing tires for my needs.... Falkens/goodyears/bridgestones wear great tires (assuming they bought the correct tire for their application) but each had their troubles... often times it was customer maintinence, people never aligned, checked pressure, or other random issues... other times it was the tires generally wearing out too damned fast, as seen with most of the newer goodyears, and on a trip to test drive for goodyear, they even told me that they were having some issues with wear... bridgestones just never impressed me for the price, as there was a BFG G-force in the mix that was always as good...
Enkei Raijin 18x8, BF Goodrich g-force comp AS 2 plus
