I scored a set of NOS Hella headlights and sold my crosshairs which I found out were aftermarket. The beam pattern is much better already, I ordered a set of Daniel Stern's H4 bulbs so I'll actually be able to see at night now.
OEM Volkswagen halogen headlights are your best bet -- at least these days. The ones VW actually equipped their Mk5's with from the factory have a VW logo on the shield in front of the low-beam bulb: He indicated there were several manufacturers that made those for VW as an OEM product. I'm most familiar with Hella, one of those brands, which of course is a world-class brand. Hella has also offered headlights on the aftermarket, that are identical to the ones they manufactured for VW, and tend to be somewaht cheaper. The only subtle difference is that those have a crosshatch pattern in the shield instead of the VW logo:
I can also confirm the Hella headlights are the same quality as oe
I just replaced both of my assemblies with Hella's from FCP. cost me about $260 for both housings and they came with all the bulbs. just make sure all of the bulbs are installed properly. one of my projector beams was not snapped in all the way so the cut-off didnt looks right. Just had to re-seat the bulb.
As GTI's indicated (and he must have known I'd jump in ), that beam pattern is perfectly normal for OEM Mk5 halogen reflector headlights.
Yes ... the stock horn is an absolute joke. People actually laugh thinking the sound is coming from a Moped. A single Hella SuperTone Horn fits perfectly ... can use original mounting location. There is NO ROOM for anything much larger.
BMW dealer is 90$ per sensor. I’ve chosen to go with Hella as they’re a strong electronics bmw manufacturer and were only 30$ per sensor. That was a big enough difference for *me* to buy Hella and if it failed then I’d go to BMW OE for 90$ and 2 hours replacing it.
So far I’ve gotten 5500 miles with the Hella sensor and there’s be no issue
LED headlights that replace the rectangular sealed beams can probably be aimed. That's the only good things about them. They won't provide any more light than sealed beams if they are road legal.
I just bought these to replace the broken ones on my 98. Like you I thought it was a solid deal and they are a little bigger than the factory ones. They will not fit on the same bracket the factory ones were mounted on. The mounting point is on the bottom vs the back like the OEMs and the additional size makes it impossible.
