The timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and labor on my 15 Jetta S was 1700 after taxes as a Euro specialist mechanic in a decent Midwest city. Included 8 hours of labor @ $180
Definitely check local shops. The dealership just quoted my dad 1700 and he went to the local shop he bought his Jetta from. They did the timing belt and water pump for 1350.
I replaced my old iron starter in my 84 GTI with the mk4 starter and what a difference (both spinning and weight!
Valve cover gasket held up no problem. Made sure it was to spec when I eventually got a torque wrench.
My problem (from 2+ years ago) turned oiut to be a bad starter. The solenoid must have gone south. A new starter motor fixed it.
Besides, with stock OE springs & OE struts the Tig tends to make the struts Top Out / Hyper Extend.
My 2029 Alltrack has developed the same problem at 50K miles. Drops about 1” for every two hours driven. You can see and smell the antifreeze.
The steering rack was replaced earlier this year when it started to lock randomly.
2012 Jetta GLI - 94K miles (I bought at 50K). Two water pumps, one heater core, and carbonized valves. Not my best experience.
I'm about ready to replace the valve covers on my 11 Touareg at 100k because they are leaking.
