I just had this problem with my daily R, it has 141,000 miles and the battery light came on. The alternator really isn't that hard to remove so I just took it off. My issue was the brushes in the regulator were worn out. I bought some new brushes; I bought 2 sets for $11. Fairly easy job, just google Valeo alternator voltage regulator brush replacement and you get a few DIY videos. BTW my slip rings looked almost new, no grooves at all.

Bought a used Valeo alternator, and sure enough, the charging problems went away, and it starts charging as soon as I start the car.

I took the starter out, it looked OK. Removing the solenoid connector was really difficult since the plastic piece that you push to disengage it had disintegrated with time/heat. No 12V on the solenoid terminal when I pressed start.

I’ve been back 3x already on the recall for the Valeo AC compressor along with rear defrost and front end issues. Oh my Jesus! I’m about ready to drive it to the dam junkyard.
Cons: multiple recalls, frequent repairs, poor reliability
Enjoy the new trans rattle for the life of the clutch, after I got mine , I really wished i would have went OEM, do research on the specific kit you choose and specifically search trans rattle or clutch rattle, find a quiet one if you can.
