Just the bigger carrier with the bigger rotors on the front. Didn't bother with bigger for the rears. I bought Red Stuff pads.
On my truck I got a screaming deal on some Brembo pads, and Raybestos rotors. Put them on today and I swear the truck stops better than my Impreza ever did with the Advance Autoparts Wearever Gold that were on it.
Wagner ThermoQuiet. Rotors are really hit or miss these days, so I usually just go with the Wagners, as I've never warped a set. Pads are pretty comparable to OEM in all respects.
Rotors: Fremax is a Brazilian company that makes awesome rotors. We install them on lots of Volvos. They are less prone to warping the OEM and have been trouble free.
Akebono makes great brake pads. I've really loved the quality of Fremax brake rotors. I put them on customers' Volvo's if they're available. Their price point is great and the quality exceeds Brembo, Ate, Zimmerman, and Textar in my experience.
That being said, it would be great to see a basic writeup with pics of the fronts and rears being changed. I ordered and received some new slotted/drilled rotors with ceramic pads. When ordering, I just used the GTI as the model, since it uses the same brake rotors as the TDI, 312mm F, 272mm R - IIRC. If I have time, I will get some pics and write a rudimentary writeup on it. Not sure if I have time/patience to tackle this myself so I may just have my Audi/VW guy do the work (he has many more tools and 2 lifts). In any case, I will try to get some info and pics in here.
Just discussed this last week. I side with my VW dealer on it. They recommend just replacing the rotors, its really not that much more than having them turned, considering you almost guarantee no pulsation, no shimmy or shudder and more even brake wear.
Some of the best cost effect rotors on the market are Centric Premium rotors, they make most of the OEM rotors in the auto market (even Brembo too) but you won't pay for the brand name on them.
Just did a brake job, new ATE OEM rotors up front with new Hawk HPS pads. Just did the run to bed them in, and I'm hearing a wierd noise. When I step on the brakes at a moderate or heavy level I hear kind of a "plunking" noise, I guess you could call it. It has a rhythm that changes with the speed of the car (i.e. the plunking slows down as the wheels slow down).
Tried aftermarket rotors on my Toyota corolla. Warped them twice within 6 months. Used cheapies from orielly's. Put Toyota rotors on, been fine ever since.
