My oil changes run about $70 (DexosD 0W-20 Mobil1 ESP X2 and OEM PF66 Filter) I pay about $45 at AutoZone for an OEM Fuel Filter (every 12k) and as the previous mechanic stated, I change my oil every 4k-5k miles. I check the oil level at 2500 miles and usually top off with a half quart.
Change fuel filter every 2-3 oil changes. Just make it a habit and on a schedule.
How old is that fuel filter? The "die on a hill" is a typical scenario for these old EFI Japanese cars when the filter is beyond saving.
For the fuel filter I used a WIX 33323 which has a convenient mounting bracket.

Start by replacing the ancient NAPA fuel filter, and only use a Bosch version.

It's a K&N filter that's compatible with the LP5 and LZ0.
Ive had this problem when people use crappy fuel filters too. Wix and fram and baldwin are awful.
not the wix. I had their filter for a few months. it started leaking and the seal wouldn't fit anymore.
