OEM Volkswagen Timing belt

I had my local mechanic (not a VW specialist) do this on my 1.8T in my Passat not too long ago. The total was around $1100. That included my regular oil and filter change, replacement of timing belt, water pump, timing belt damper, and accessory belts (a/c, power steering and alternator).

Vehicle: Volkswagen Passat

Gates Timing belt

I'm using a 16V crank sprocket, 9A 16V intermediate shaft and sprocket, oil pump drive and oil pump, Gates T226 timing belt (155 teeth) and a tensioner pulley from a 2.4 Mitsu Galant.

Vehicle: Volkswagen Corrado
Part number: T226

Gates Timing belt

I installed a VW oem belt made by Gates in Germany without having to pry the belt on. The Gates belt seemed to have a little more "give" than the Contitech belt.

Pros: more "give" than Contitech
Cons: more expensive
Part number: 06B 109 119A

My Audi 20v five potter uses the same tooth profile as the 16v but the t-belt is the 19mm wide flavor. I've never minded ripping that thing up to 7K and feared that the belt would'nt hold up... even withe the 4 extra valves and the waterpump running off that belt!! I'would'nt panic as long as it gets replaced when it's due. Oh and don't get me none of that cheapo stuff either.. gotta be ContiTech or Gates!!! And don't spill oil or grease on any belt!!

Pros: holds up to 7K
Cons: replace when due
Vehicle: Audi

got the stock timing belt parts in and replaced the hack job that I had for hte mk1 mount back to all the stock mk4 thicker tdi timing belt - got rid of the 16v style mounts and back to all of the appropriate covers.

Pros: stock parts, appropriate covers

I changed with new belt but it is also a half tooth. It always lines up with cam cover arrow just at the line at the end of the tooth rather than middle of it at tdc.

Cons: half tooth off

I want to avoid the Porsche engine because last time the timing belt broke it cost me $2000 to get things repaired. Plus I don't want to constantly be nervous about it breaking. It's not just the belt though - the Porsche engine is aluminum with free-standning cylinders, no liners, balance shafts which have their own timing belt which runs right next to the main timing belt, etc. Not to mention parts are super expensive.

Cons: expensive repair, unreliable, high anxiety
Vehicle: Porsche
