OEM Volkswagen Valve cover

I had my valve cover replaced due to it dying while on low rpm and idling. The valve cover has the pcv, n80, and other important components integrated within. So it can be a problem for many reasons. This solved all my issues that the dealer could not figure out.

Pros: solved all my issues
Vehicle: Volkswagen Jetta

Mine smoked like crazy and was using about 1 quart per 100 miles, which for the previous owner caused engine failure. I rebuilt the motor and used the old valve cover and ultimately had the same issue. Replaced the valve cover and it hasn't used a drop of oil over 6000 miles.

Pros: no oil consumption
Cons: previous oil consumption
Vehicle: Audi A3
Mileage: 6000 km

Just an update for those following this; 11,000 miles since I replaced the VC. I've changed the oil 2 times and and about to do number 3. Zero consumption between changes. Not counting the changes it has burned nothing in 11k miles.

Pros: zero consumption
Cons: burning oil
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 11000 km

This thread helped me solve my own oil consumption issue. I was also burning 1qt every 200 miles. I replaced the valve cover and 600 miles later and I haven't lost a drop.

Pros: haven't lost a drop
Cons: burning oil
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 600 km

It certainly possible. That was my experience, my plugs looked like that and worse. For me number 3 was soaking wet with oil. since replacing my cover I have zero oil loss over 5000 mile OCI, and my plugs stay dry.

Pros: zero oil loss, plugs dry
Cons: plugs soaking wet
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Mileage: 5000 km

  • Neat appearance:

My ultimate solution was to run some OEM GM HP tall valve covers with the factory baffle. The factory used a layered baffle design that is very effective for normal street use. Can't cut it with high G's and rev's associated with Autocross and Track Days though.

Pros: effective for street use
Cons: not for high G's/rev's

OEM FORD Valve cover

I brought my 2017 eco boost in for an oil change at 50,000 miles and got it back a week later after they replaced a cracked valve cover, bad cam phasers and LEAKING HEAD GASKET.

Cons: cracked valve cover, bad cam phasers
Vehicle: Ford
Mileage: 50000 km

OEM Audi Valve cover

Audi 2.7T engine found in B5 S4 & C5 A6 + Allroad Notorious for oil leaks from valve covers + cam/crank seals, very high operating temperatures (causing cooling issues), various sensors failing way too early, complex to work on, tight fit especially in B5 S4.

Cons: oil leaks, cooling issues
Vehicle: Audi S4
