Cabin filter Mann or K&N
What finally seemed to help was replacing the cabin air filter (did myself in 3/2017) with one of the MANN charcoal filters (FP26 009 "Frecious Plus"). Perhaps this was just coincidental, but we have not experienced the problem since changing the filter.
You can get the engine and cabin filters on Amazon and save yourself $150+ dollars. Look up Mann filters (which is the same thing VW uses) for you year.
Might be a silly question, but have you considered building it to have a Mann CU 2038 fit it? Have been running those in my \"stock\" cabin air filter since the original filter is NLA.
I checked to make sure the cabin filter wasn't restricted (Mann filter less than a year old).
In talking to some other people, Mann seems the way to go as it is essentially OEM with a lower price tag--their cabin air filter is also activated charcoal, so that's a plus--ordering up.
