Oil filter Fram or Mann
Fram makes GM oil filters. At least they used to. Compare the black (factory) filter or the AC blue filter next to a Fram. Same dimples beneath the grip on the Fram. IIRC there are two companies that make most of the normal oil filters. Even the expensive Mobile 1 filters, though those just use higher micron elements is all. Wix is the other company. Not sure who makes Subaru's but I'm sure it's the same story. Been personally using them for decades, never had an issue. Wife rolled her Honda over 500K using them every 5,000 miles.
Best is sticking with OE stuff (VW, Mann, or Mahle - Mann filters can be had from many places online.) If I were to shotgun parts at this (read: not bother checking pressure with a gauge, just throw parts at it), I would do a good filter, and an actual VW pressure switch
There is that possibility, I have had a Fram filter that self disintegrate inside due to age of the filter ( I had them for a while before use).... when I finally took out the filter and shakes it, it was definitely loose. It was causing that same oil filter light intermittently.
I run all of my fleet either on OE VAG filters or Mahle and Mann who are the OEMs for VAG. I buy filters in bulk, depending on who has which filter at an attractive price at the moment. Right now I have a Mann HU 719/7x in the Eurovan - according to the maintenance spreadsheet I bought it for $7.72 from autohausaz.
Make sure you get ONLY an OEM Mann oil filter or you WILL have oil pressure issues and you WILL shorten the life of your motor, guaranteed.
Buy Mann/Mahle or equivalent filters - Amazon/ebay/rockauto. Those are OEM suppliers.
I have used Fram for 20+ years. Every single car lasted well over 116,000 miles. I have seen the issues, complaints, and so on, just lucky I guess. If I could get the FRAM filter for it, I used it. Then again, back then, on some of those models, they were a better filter.
fram or almost as junk as fram filter they have been known to cause all sorts of oil pressure issues.
i got the filter off, some POS fram
i know that look! i actually bought a fram filter when i turbo'd my car, it was a new design from their original design. they used to be exact copies of the vw/hengst and mann. design. it had Plastic "caps" and was essentially fused to the filter media. the new ones however are a strange material that is sewn onto the media with a gauze like inner circle. so i used it and after running the turbo for a few weeks i did a maintence change and noticed the filter was totally collapsed upon itself.
