Shock absorbers Bilstein or KYB
I live in CT and went back to stock springs with gas charged sporty shocks on my 84 GTI for the same reason. Car is 10x more fun to drive now IMO. Still sporty I'm running the stock springs with Bilstien in the back
I'm on H&R Sport springs and B8s on my 4Mo GSW - great setup.
I have Bilstein B8s paired with Neuspeed sport springs and would recommend them based on my experience
Stay with HR Sports and get Bilstein 8s, add a GOLF R RSB take off at the same time and have it aligned. You'll have a great setup
I also did the b6’s paired with eibach pro kit, big difference!!
My suggestion - buy a set of regular aftermarket shock absorbers but from a reliable manufacturer like KYB...You'll ride lower, it'll be a bit stiffer but you'll not lose your teeth fillings each time you hit a pothole.
Bilstein shocks and lowering springs, you retain a more comfortable ride whilst getting better handling and making the car a bit lower
I lifted my other 2004GX470 with some Bilsteins and springs (in back). It rode also great. I sold it to my mom and she loved it and the ride.
The Excel-G (which I believe are called the GR-2 now) are stock replacements. If you just want to freshen things up, they'd be fine, and with a mild drop I think they'd be okay in terms of longevity (but you never know). If you're looking for a performance shock though, the GR-2 is not it.
I'm using bilstein b4's and when I put it all back together I ended up with over a fist of tire to fender gap and am trying to figure out how to fix this. Previous ride height was like 2 or 3 fingers between the tire and arch.
