Shock absorbers KONI or GABRIEL
I replaced the six year old KYB Excel-G shocks with Gabriel Max Control. The reviews say they are firm shocks. They are firmer than the KYB when they were new, but not too firm . Perfect for my liking. They really handle speed bumps well and almost completely eliminate sway when driving on mountain roads. Also, the truck stays level when coming to a stop. No nosedive.
Just swapping to konis with stock everything else on my 325ic made a huge difference for autox. Comfy enough for thousands at a time lol.
I daily Koni Special Actives like the other guy, love them.
My roads are also NOT well maintained and the Koni shocks/struts are more comfortable than the M-Sport shocks/struts I started with.
If a 2nd opinion actually confirms that shocks/struts are worn, my approach would be to replace with upgrade - Koni or Bilstein. Not much different than what you're being quoted cost-wise and easily run for 100k mi +. I think my ride/handling improved with Koni Yellow and Eibach springs on my 2019, though it's definitely more GTi/R and less "plush" than stock eGolf.
When I recieved the car, it needed brakes immediately. I then proceeded to go through the whole car. Especially the underside. I removed the entire front and rear suspension along with the rear subframe. Replaced all arms including upgrading to the R129 front lowers which allow clearance for bigger brakes, bushings, ball joints, tie rods, center drag link, engine and trans mounts, C/V axles, flex disc, front and rear brakes and larger rear sway bar with metal links. I lowered the car with H&R non SLS springs and Koni shocks.
I have been running koni yellows with oem springs. Great for daily
I put in the Gabriel’s at 151k and have taken my 02 into nasty desert. They’ve held up great. For the last 40k
I have the Koni yellows. Stick with OEM Sachs. Unless you are doing a ton of freeway miles, or want the feel of a go-cart(which is a little fun), the shocks are not worth the ride or the money. The ride is too stiff for street, but absolutely perfect on the highway cruising over 85mph for hours.
They used cheap shit quickstruts. Buy new OEM springs and Koni shocks and it will be back to normal.
