Steering rack OEM Subaru or OEM Honda
I had the steering rack in my 2016 STI replaced at an independent Subaru shop and it was $730 for an OEM rack and $525 in labor not including a power steering flush and alignment.
The steering rack leak soon turned to a steering rack flood. The seals were basically plastic and blew out. The replacement has been excellent.
I think it’s improved slightly. The new steering rack is similar to the one in the WRX.
I’m having the same problem too. They told me everything was good with my car, I’m just like it doesn’t feel good so we went for a drive and he states he didn’t feel it and that’s how the car drives. I’ve been driving for 20 yrs and definitely know that is not how a car is supposed to drive!
I went to a different service center and they found the issues but now the part is in back order and they don’t know how long it’ll take. This is the worst experience I’ve had with a car. I used to drive Ford and wish I would have stayed, I never had any issues
I’m having the same problem too!!! I went in to one service center and was told your car is good no issues. He pretty much told me the same thing about that how the car is supposed to drive . I’m like dude I’ve been driving for 20 yrs so I think I know how a car is supposed to drive! I went to another service center and they told me they found an issue. They ordered the part but of course on back order.
I just put in a remanufactured $150 rack and it's a huge (bad) difference.
My 2023 civic just started doing this. I noticed it today while driving on the freeway - I would try to make small adjustments to stay centered in my lane, and the steering wheel would fight me so I had to make bigger adjustments than I should have. I’m irritated with this steering problem and will take my car back in if this keeps happening
My car only sticks after 5-10 minutes of driving. Gets progressively more apparent with time. Speed must be over 40 to really feel. Worst sticks are on freeway curves to the left then trying to adjust to the right.
My sticky steering just started. 3.5k miles. 22 sport sedan ???? it's so weird and unnatural. My first foreign car and this + steering rack is pretty big recall. Dang
I tried to get the car repaired by Honda, they refused (3 times), and so I was one of the people that filed a complaint with the NHTSA.
I received a letter last week from Honda informing me of the recall and immediately made an appt to get it inspected. Upon bringing it to the dealer, I let the service adviser know I have been having steering issues with the car. He immediately begins to doubt me and try to convince me that maybe it's just how the car is supposed to drive, despite the fact that I was there for a recall on the steering wheel. I cut him off, told him I know what normal steering is, and that there is an issue with the car that needs to be repaired. I politely requested they inspect it and get back to me.
Two hours later, I receive a call saying the car passed the inspection and that I was all good to go. I was furious but I requested a ride along. The tech was a cool guy and once I explained to him how to recreate the problem, he tried it out for himself and then he was able to notice it. He said he was going to try to help me out and would contact the Honda tech advisers to have them walk him through diagnostics. Lo and behold, they call me next day and tell me that there is an issue with the steering rack and they're going to replace it under the recall.
The part is on backorder which I expected, but what frustrates me is the great lengths I had to go to convince Honda that there was an issue with the car. It also makes me wonder how many people with faulty steering racks are they letting drive off the lot, despite there being a recall? I love the Civic, but this experience has been super frustrating and definitely makes me reconsider whether I want a Honda for my next car.
