Bilstein Shock absorbers
KBATTPO
Rating 5.0
  • Body bounce:
  • Bottoming:
  • Leaks:

I bought my 2003 with some autostore garbage in the front (Monroe or Gabriel or some such crap - don't remember now) and the rather tired OE Sachs/Boge in the back. The damned thing was scary do drive above 35. Installed Bilstein HD 24-019118 ($203.90 for the pair from eshocks) in the front and the 24-214230 ($185.50 for the pair from eshocks) in the back. Very happy with the result. Took the bus above 100 in Texas and Arizona on the way to California this past January - and what a difference this made! It sat on the road like a flatiron on the ironing board. Also, do keep in mind that Bilstein shocks carry lifetime warranty and the company stands behind it 100%. My S6 currently rides on its 3rd set of Bilstein Sport (after 2 free warranty replacements) in the 16 years under my ownership - Bilstein replaced them each time w/o a flinch. Konis are good, but they sometimes leak. Bilsteins wear out but they don't leak. At least in my experience.

Pros: very happy with result, stable ride, lifetime warranty
Cons: wear out
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Part number: 24-019118

Bilstein Shock absorbers
gti_matt
Rating 4.0
  • Body bounce:
  • Bottoming:

I have a 1993 GL with Bilstein HDs. They are firm but I would not want them firmer. On a heavier VR6 camper I would think they'd be even more suitable for the job.

Pros: firm, suitable for heavy vehicle

I decided to replace all the rings with a new set from MAHLE (Part #41926CP, $69.79 for a full set from RockAuto.com- much less expensive than buying them in a VW-branded package).

Pros: less expensive than VW
Vehicle: Volkswagen
Part number: 41926CP

OEM Volkswagen EGR valve
ncpsu
Rating 5.0
  • Power:
  • Idle:

Periodically on my 2009 4.0, it would stall out, traction light would come on as well. Never encountered a check engine light what so ever. Would occur typically at slow speeds under 30 mph. Replaced the egr valve a few months ago and has not experienced another stall, noticed some hesitation is gone as well and milage is not as bad as we were seeing. Its a fairly easy swap and easily sourced part.

Pros: easy swap, mileage improved
Vehicle: Volkswagen

However I have Carbotech brake pads, the 1521's for the street and then for the track day I had XP12 (front) XP10 (rear). Pads are compatible with the rotor, and I had the track pads well bedded in.

Pros: pads compatible with rotor

OEM Volkswagen Timing belt
sudrabs3
Rating 2.0
  • Visible wear:

My original timing belt assy failed at 87,0000 miles at just over 8 years. I think it might have been the tensioner failing that actually caused it. Luckily alll I had to do was pay for the timing belt replacement and VW covered the head replacement.

Pros: VW covered head replacement
Cons: timing belt assembly failed
Vehicle: Volkswagen Passat
Mileage: 140013 km
