Akebono Brake pads
SLAB
Rating 5.0
  • Braking:
  • Dust:

i have akebono pro act ceramic pads on my golf with 20thAE brakes. they dont seem to be wearing down in the past 5 years, and the rotors have no grooving or wear on them. nice change from doing an annual 4-wheel brake job

Pros: rotors have no grooving

Falcon Brake discs
Icer Jo
Rating 4.0
  • Braking:

I was doing some more research, and found out that Alcon has replacement rotors for the front, albeit Price is high(on par with RacingBrake's price but overall better quality i'm sure) I'm sure it is worth it, which will also allow for the partially cheaper rear matching Alcon Big rotor kit for the golf R to be utilized.

Pros: better quality
Cons: price is high

HELIX Headlights
Gbells124
Rating 5.0
  • Brightness:

buy the helix oem-ish lights from ecs. i got them and put a hid kit in them and they work great. they look oem but without the orange marker lights on the sides. your gonna get a bulb out warning no matter what you choose but from what i have read and heard the helix projector led housings work and look a lot nicer than the winpower ones. i havent seen them in person, but ive heard the winpower ones led's are kinda dim. the helix ones are just as bright as oem. ive put them side by side with a friends gli with oem bixenons and they pretty much match besides the marker lights. i couldnt be happier with them. install is easy too.

Pros: look oem, work great
Cons: bulb out warning

Pirelli Tires

I've been AutoX-ing my MkVII this year as well. Nothing too serious though, just more for the fun of getting out and tearing around in the car and meeting lots of great people. I went with tires/wheels this season rather than a tune as many others have, not only to stay in GS, but also because the stock Pirelli P7s just didn't cut it, even for street driving, it would only be worse with more power. I went with a nice easy package from Tirerack on some wheels that were 5lbs lighter per corner and I couldn't pass up on the closeout pricing for the Direzza ZIIs. I only wish I had done it sooner! The added grip really did transform the car, turn-in is so much crisper, and most of the time you can really get the car to go where you want to put it. Rotation is greatly improved too, I'm continuously amazed at how well this car rotates for a heavy FWD.

Pros: added grip, crisper turn-in
Cons: stock Pirelli P7s crappy

OEM Volkswagen Brake pads
CateraMV6
Rating 4.0
  • Braking:

I have the R brakes on my car, those were fairly easy to sourse as they can be bought remanufactured off Rockauto and they are also available as Passat VR6 brakes but no one seems to note that. Also the CC with the VR6 has them stock. Those can be found at scrap yards but agian everyone searches R brakes but the other models are the same just not painted blue. I found my kit on ebay for 750$ and it had everything for the swap, front and rear also rotors and calipers and caliper carriers. To me that is a good bang for the buck in terms of improvement in braking that I saw and the cost associated even if I would have gone with new hardware.

Pros: good bang for buck, improved braking

OEM Porsche Brake caliper
nikhsub1
Rating 5.0
  • Smell/heat:

Porsche Boxter calipers (non S). You retain OEM rotors you just need to source carriers (I know someone makes them just can't remember) and lines. Hands down best bang for buck and awesome performance. You save a bunch of weight and move to a fixed 4 piston caliper on each side.

Pros: awesome performance, best bang for buck
Cons: need to source carriers

Autolite Spark plug
medic31
Rating 1.0
  • Acceleration:

I didn't know any better and used ****ty autolite spark plugs, and everything was fine and the misfires went away... A few days ago I noticed on quick acceleration and around 4-5k RPM's, the engine loses power, accelerates slower than...well, slower than a 2.0 normally is.

Cons: engine loses power, accelerates slower
