I always recommend using a genuine VW oil filter.
Best Oil filter for Volkswagen Golf
Been using these since I got this car 3 years ago.
Mann oil filter, it's want they use in Europe (and what VW recommends)
Original owner of a mk6 R here  my R has ~50k miles on the clock. lightly modded (see sig) and I have never had any issues other than normal wear stuff. plugs/oil/filters u know. car still feels very close to new.
Spring is commin so i made service of my "R" oil Millers XF 5W40 + with oil filter Mann'a new oil filter cover - old one broke during disassembing
Per VAG-COM, 5,7xx miles and 372 days on this filter (Mann as I posted above): Looks fine to me!
I had this very same problem with my golf. Replaced both oil pressure sensors....nothing. Did an oil change....nothing. Replaced the instrument cluster....nothing. I was about to pull the pan off the motor to check for clogging on the screen or if the pump was faulty when I thought about an engine flush. I did just that, new 10w40 oil and mann filter and problem solved.
To change oil for a 2011 VW golf, you do need a special oil filter wrench (14 Points, 74mm),as the new german cars are using a cartridge type oil filter. I got mine from ebay, made of cast aluminium, works like a charm.
Fram filters do NOT have an anti drain back valve in them.
cut a few fram filters before and they were horrid. if you do use a fram filter, use the Xtended Gaurd, much better then the fram PH filters
