OEM Subaru Head gasket

642 head gaskets from a similar year wrx. Don’t use the same 633 or you will have the same problem again.

Pros: solves recurring problem
Vehicle: Subaru
Part number: 642

Victor Reinz Head gasket

I have used Victor Reinz Stacked gaskets and ARP head studs with great success on a boosted ABA. If it's just a stock motor no boost, I've also used Victor Reinz head bolts and gasket with no issues.

Pros: great success, no issues

OEM Volkswagen Head gasket

Doing a head gasket is easy. Only a few special tools are needed depending on the type of head bolt that is being used. Head Bolts are not re-usable in these beasties you have to buy new.

Pros: easy, few special tools
Cons: head bolts not re-usable
Vehicle: Volkswagen

OEM Subaru Head gasket

If it's the typical 2.5 SOHC H4, that is the year and same mileage where my head gaskets failed on my Legacy of that generation. The failures are external leaks almost all the time so if you see drops of oil on your driveway, it's a good chance they are weeping.

Cons: external leaks, oil drops
Vehicle: Subaru Legacy

Just from a bit of personal experience and a few friends stories, the 2ZR-FE. For a motor used in so many of their cars (2009-2012 Corolla and 2010-2015 Prius) you wouldn't think they'd be blowing head gaskets at all. I have the same motor in my Scion xD and blew the HG at 150k miles.

Cons: blowing head gaskets
Mileage: 150000 km

I'll toss in the 7M-GE/GTE. Pretty much guaranteed to have a failed head gasket due to under-torqued head bolts unless you caught it ahead of time. Usually happened at the back due to excessive heat at the rear of the engine.

Pros: sounded great exhaust system
Cons: failed head gasket
Mileage: 200000 km

OEM Hyundai Head gasket

I had a Hyundai i30N at 15,000 miles - 3 years old the head gasket blew when they took apart to investigate it was a fault in the moulding on the block I think from memory.

Cons: blew at low mileage, moulding fault
Vehicle: Hyundai
Mileage: 24140 km

I drove my 2003 Honda CRV with a blown head gasket for over 6 months. Drove it everywhere knowing it was on its last leg. The engine would go into “safe” mode often to protect the engine. That means i can’t accelerate past 60mph. Had to change the spark plugs once a month. Had to add oil and coolant every single time i drove it. Oil showed up in the radiator AND over filling the over flow. Finally gave out three weeks ago.

Cons: safe mode, frequent maintenance
Vehicle: Honda

The Japanese car that's let me down has been Subaru. Two blown head gaskets resulted in the engine overheating and basically turning into scrap.

Cons: blown head gaskets, overheating
Vehicle: Subaru
