OEM Volkswagen Head gasket

I bought mine and have spent close to 2k on it already. Needed a he'd gasket so I did a 2.0 16v swap. But put all new gaskets, motor mounts, shift kit, etc. Don't skimpy on doing it right.

Pros: new gaskets, motor mounts
Cons: spent close to 2k
Vehicle: Volkswagen Scirocco

My HG went bad around 180k, with no EGR cleaning by the previous owner. It started to consume coolant pretty quick and smoke came out of coolant tank lol

Replaced HG is a few weeks, cleaned air intake manifold and EGR. Now, I’m hoping to get many more miles from it :)

Pros: Replaced HG, cleaned EGR
Cons: consume coolant, smoke came
Vehicle: Toyota Prius
Mileage: 180000 km

Mine went at 160K so it’s coming soon. The single layered graphite that is on there now will always wear out quicker with time. It’s a “design flaw” and will always go out quickly.

Cons: failed at 160k, design flaw, wears out quickly
Mileage: 160000 km

  • Overheating:

Mine went at 220k, 2015 Prius V. Fixed it myself but I had the tools/time/interest. If you’ve overheated already it’s probably warped the head, cheaper to get a new (used) engine, have them put a new head gasket on that engine before it goes it to ward off future trouble.

Cons: part failed, head warped
Vehicle: Toyota Prius
Mileage: 354000 km

  • Overheating:

The 4.0 Aurora V8, essentially a modified Northstar V8, comes with the dreaded headgasket (headbolt) issue. Having this car be a "bottom breather" with an engine that would basically warp when it got too hot was a stupid move. My family owned 3 of these and all 3 suffered the same fate. Horrible design choices.

Cons: dreaded headgasket issue, engine warped when hot

For about 35 minutes, I owned an 87 Mercedes diesel wagon. I got it in a trade deal with an MPV for my Dodge Stealth, and really just didn't care for it. So while I was driving it home, I called a friend who was interested in cars like these. He said, "Bring it over." So I drove to his place, and he gave me decent money for it. A month later, the headgasket blew, then the injection pump failed.

Pros: got decent money
Cons: headgasket blew, pump failed
Vehicle: Mercedes

GM iron duke and pushrod 2.2. Underwhelming? I can attest to that. Had the 2.2L 118HP 4-cylinder engine in my first car. fan bearings decided to give up one day on the highway. Head gasket job twice in 85,000 miles.

Cons: fan bearings failure, head gasket issues
Vehicle: Chevrolet
Mileage: 85000 km

Had a Mk4 come in with \"a bad headgasket.\" Unusual repair for a model with a MLS headgasket stock...For the low price of using the wrong coolant the customer either gets to buy a used/reman head or spend big $ fixing this one.

Pros: phosphate free antifreeze good
Cons: wrong coolant expensive
Vehicle: Volkswagen
