+1 for the Continental kit.
Owner reviews for timing belt kit
Used a aisin timing belt kit and it worked fine. I did have to buy the longer bolt for the small idler bearing tho since the new ones have 2 bushings instead of just 1.
New timing belt kit installed; thermostat, fan clutch, water pump DONE (also new VW coolant cap). I saved that plastic impeller as a souvenir, cracked from front to back.
I selected the Continental ContiTech Pro Series Plus timing kit with plastic impeller (PP334LK1) for $245 from Bap Geon in Newport News, Virginia, and it contains the following components: ContiTech timing belt Annex-Technik water pump with plastic impeller NTN and Schaeffler idler pulleys Litens tensioner pulley OE camshaft seal Installation instructions Installation was performed for $300 by Jeff Grant at www.volkswagenrepairva.com Continental ContiTech Pro Series Mileage Guarantee Registration for 75k parts warranty completed.

I used the basic ContiTech kit there when I did my GTI. I also separately sourced a pump with a metal impeller and a Conti accessory belt.
Just did my timing belt on my EJ22 (98 Outback Sport) two weeks ago. Gates kit ran me $200. I wouldn't recommend anything aftermarket under Gates.
