Oil filter Fram or Mann
I have done my own routine service ever since, with Mobil 10W-40 and the Mann 950/4 filter, which is the largest one I can cram between the oil cooler and the left engine mount.
Also have an 08 328i, I use and stand by Liqui Moly 5W30 Special Tech oil paired with their Ceratec additive and an OE Mann filter. It is perfect for a high mileage BMW and makes it run better than ever.
Buy a good filter too, Mann is a very good one.
OEM Engine cover intake and piping with new MANN Filter never used
I've used Mann, Mahler, Bosche, K&N, and Porsche filters and have seen no difference apart from K&N have a welded bolt on top to ease removal.
Replaced the NGK Iridium spark plugs, MANN engine filter and cabin air filter a week after getting the car and was easing it with E85 and fuel cleaners before that as the owner told me it was sitting around for a year. Very happy with its idle noise and freeway speeds (in Mexico of course).
With synthetic oil do you need a fancy filter? Since I change them very religiously, I wouldn't think it would matter. I use the FRAM filter (standard size).
I had a FRAM oil filter on my 05 Impreza, I think the part number was #PH6607, I noticed i i was “burning” a ton of oil! I went to do my usual 3K Mile oil change. I noticed the oil levels were alot lower than the time i check a few days prior! I looked under the car and there was oil EVERYWHERE! Mainly built up around the filter!
I used a FRAM oil filter on the car at my last oil change and it turns out it collapsed internally triggering a low engine oil pressure to my ECU. The garage (VW/Audi/Porsche specialized) told me to never use anything other than Mann filters on my GTI since everything else is either gonna collapse or be more expensive than the Mann for no added benefits.
The cardboard construction on a Fram filter would have come apart.
