Shock absorbers KYB or Monroe
Based on what I've experienced with my S3 w/o the mag ride w/18s. The ride quality is fine. Part of my drive to work is a country road I drive that is 15 miles of very bumpy asphalt that has been patched over and over. I'm looking forward to trying it out at an autocross in the coming weeks. I surmise the standard suspension will do very well. The ride is on par w/an Evo w/newer KYB shocks or older Bilsteins which is great for me, but others may find it a bit firm.
i have a set of those on my caddy that were installed when my dad and i rebuilt my truck in 2002 and they work just fine.
New KYB gas adjust shocks on all four corners.
If you decide to go with the Routan SE you could change out the rear shocks for Monroe Sensa Trac. They are load adjusting and will support the extra weight of towing. They were very easy to install on our SUV, provide better handling and the vehicle stays level with over 500 pounds loaded in the back.
AAS (Auto Adjusting Suspension) 3 stage adjustable shocks with motor on top that adjusts damping. Super simple reliable system. OEM Front shocks on my car lasted til 300k km. Rear shocks lasted til 240k.
KYB GR-2 rear shocks to replace leaking originals - $115
KYBs cost only a little bit more than comparable Monroes, and in my experience they're a lot nicer than Monroes.
i had Konis, then Bilsteins, then KYB AGX on my 2004 jetta 1.8T. I liked the KYB AGX a lot, had no complaints. I kept stock springs.
I had GR-2s on an old Mk3 Golf. They were fine.
When I had my 337 GTI, the Monroe shocks it came with DRASTICALLY changed in performance by the 20k mile mark.. The suspension was MUCH bouncier and less tight as when I first got the car. The was car driven very spirited.
