For example, Maxxis MA-Z1's cost me $135ea and last about 30,000kms, but the Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001's on my car at the moment can get about 60-80,000kms, but cost $185ea.
These were on my R32 (as shown) and only saw 5-6k on the roads, and were stored winters. That said, tires are more of a gimme than anything else. With the off camber/toe wear from a substantially lowered R you lose a lot of inner tread.
I had the WS-50 on my Miata (came with it) and they were fanfukintastic in snow and ice but lasted about 20,000 miles total before turning into slippy dangerous banana peels while still showing 6/32 remaining.
Last winter I made the switch from studded Pirelli Winter Carvings to studless Bridgestone Blizzak WS60s... I was extremely impressed with them. Worked great in the white stuff.

I loved the 960's I had on my mkV GTI. I thought they were a great replacement for the RE050's that came stock on the car. I thought the grip on the dry was very similar between the two, but the 960's were better when the weather got bad--as well as lasting longer.
Drove in the rain with the Dunlop Saturday. The traction control came on a few times, but I think its due more to the amount of low-end torque the GLI makes. Now it wasn't difficult to drive, just watch how much throttle you give it.
I had a Falken Ziex 512 tire explote on the highway so I switched to Dunlop Direzza DZ101s and it's probably the worst rain tire I've had, I'm spinning tires everywhere... straight line, turning, braking.
my buddy just picked up ws70's for his 2011 wrx. yesterday we went for a ride up the mountains and both of us where dissapointed in the ws70's. There was no snow or ice, but we did hit wet/damp roads and the ws70's where very squirmy in the corners. they sort of understeer then snap and oversteer. I wouldnt suggest them if she does any sort of spirited driving.
