I've had several cars of the $150 variety. The best was a 1990 VW Fox that I bought for $150 from the original owner. I then proceeded to drive it about 150K before I spent another cent on it besides oil tires and gas.
I was running Motul 8100 and got tired of having to pay alot of money and get it shipped, so I did alot of research and found that overall, the Rotella is one of the best oils for the price, so I switched to that. I notice no difference in power, and it costs alot less
I've had Hawk performance Ceramic pads on my GLI for 2+ years. No problems at all and they stop very well.
I had them stock on my .:R32. I easily got 25K miles out of the first set, but could easily have gotten 30K had I not bubbled one and blown out another in on of the 3 winters I have had the car. At 25K I got 2 more tires and the noise is about similar, so they didn't get too loud after 2 years. They actually are a lot quieter than the new Contiprocontact tires on the new TDI, designed to be low rolling resistance and quiet.
I find driving with my fog lights on in my Mk3 helps with the light output, especially in the darker roads with less/no street lamps.
Only use Genuine VW or Bosch distributor caps and rotors.
For the handling and ride comfort: Koni FSD - 560.00 shipped (free install kit comes with R32/TT solid rubber bushes, strut mounts and bearings) (FSD not to be used with sport or race springs) or Bilstein HD - 520.00 shipped (probably a firmer and sometimes harsher ride than Koni, but also probably not that bad if your streets are any good) (does not come with free install kit, so add 60.00 to the refresh)
i drive a 95 jetta vr6 i currently running mobil 1 10w-40 but i been hearing alot of good things about this new castrol edge thinking about switching to the 5w-40....im hoping i feel a difference
Autolite 4162's, I changed them out every 1000 miles.
I've read some other threads where people have had to replace their brake pads at 20k miles or so, some think it was due to a tight emergency brake forcing the brake assist to clamp.
