In the past week I've replaced the Timing Belt, Tensioner, Water Pump, flushed the coolant and installed a new Mann Air Filter.
Reviews of spare parts for Volvo
When we got it most of the major fluids and mechanicals had been done(timing belt, control arms). It has close to 120k now and after some more maintenance( tie rods, new tires, alignment) it drives brand new, only thing left to replace are the brake pads and rotors.
I have 2005 S60 Turbo as a daily. Bought it brand new in 2005 and she now has 157,000 trouble-free miles. However, being a European car, replacement items can be pretty expensive. I've replaced: brakes and rotors ($1,200).
I have a set of unknown, but probably OEM pads on the rear brakes on my wagon and they spew dust like crazy, when the fronts wore down I replaced them with akebonos.. no dust, no noise, no issues in 20k miles.
I trust companies like Brembo or mintex to make decent, quality parts more than I trust Volvo to supply some. Volvo themselves don't make brake components. On my 240 for example the front brakes are Girling and the rears are ATE.
I have never put on a set of OEM pads & have had 0 issues. My S80 came with them and honestly I think the akebonos I replaced them with are better. The only bad thing about the cheap (duralast, I'm looking at you) pads is that they screech a lot if you don't coat the back in DBQ.
I ran those Kumhos on the Volvo 850 Turbo I had, I liked them a lot. The only downside was being that the car was heavy, you could feel the sidewall flex in hard cornering, then again they are a sport all season and not a true summer tire so I think they fit the bill nicely.
Bought my gf a 96 850 turbo meticulously maintained, odo is broken at 312, car should be neering 500k, doesnt burn leak anything, drive amazing on the high and returns 21.3 mpg, only think i dont like about it is no off the line grunt and the brakes arent the best.
K&N filters are a scam. Anyone who installs them is a sucker. Anyone who recommends them is a rube who doesn't understand how their vehicle works.
If you care about your car, DO NOT install one of this shitty products.
THEY DO NOT MAKE MORE PERFORMANCE ON A STOCK OR NEAR-STOCK VEHICLE.
THEY ALSO DO NOT FILTER WORTH A CRAP.
YOU WILL NOT HELP YOUR ENGINE AND YOU WILL CAUSE EXCESSIVE WEAR.
Steering rack on a Volvo V70 (and I expect most P80/P2 chassis), the rack doubles as an engine mount. So you've got to rock the engine forward to pull the rack out. Then you find out that the refurbished rack had the mount part cut off, and the resulting engine shake is no worse than it was prior to rack replacement, so why was that included in the first place?
