Can confirm Mk3 starters work on Mk1s as long as it's a manual Mk1, have had one on for years, have seen it done on several Mk1s.
Bump update for readers with the same problem. Extended the OCI to 10k miles this time. Zero consumption again after 10,000 mi.
Order the OEM Fog Lights, Fog Trim Grilles and VW OEM retro fit harness from Paul at Deutsche Auto Parts. Retro fit kit allows you to hook up the OEM without running through the CECM if you don't want to upgrade with computer. You will not be able to have the fogs run as cornering lights unless you replace the CECM however. I did not want the cornering anyway since I run my fogs all the time regardless. I highly suggest getting all OEM parts for the fog retro fit instead of cheaper options. I had to replace the first retro fit fog harness I bought because it crapped out on me in under two weeks. Go OEM parts and do it right and do it once.
I replaced my front strut mount/bearing when installing new set up yesterday and the new VW OEM mounts did not have the tab on the edge like the original ones did that when installed you have pointed forward, the new VW OEM mounts have an arrow on top of mount that I you have pointed towards front of the car when installed.
my intake manifold was replaced somewhere around 25-30k miles or so. I was told it was a revised part, and I haven't had any problems since. I'm at 45k now.
Only main issues I saw were leaking vacuum pumps, valve cover gaskets, pcv leaks (whole valve cover assembly) and water pump sepage.
I thought the biggest let down of the stock mk7 GTI brakes where the ****ty stock pads cooking very easily, but with a good set of pads and fluid where pretty descent.
AWFUL. I have one. Bought it two years ago, 2011 Jetta 2.5SE (had 14k on it when I bought it) and its the worst car I have ever driven. I needed to get something quick because my truck was on its way out, this was cheap figured why not save on gas and try it out. Man, I cannot begin to explain to you how badly I have regretted this. 20k Horn Blew out and needed to be replaced 25k Radio blew out, needed to be replaced 30k AC Compressor stopped working and needed to be replaced. 40k Rear right window motor stopped working and needed to be replaced. Couldn't rotate the tires due to them wearing down weirdly and when rotated would cause a vibration. No matter what they did. Everything Rattles, and when I say everything, I mean, EVERYTHING. This will be my last VW ever, worst purchase I have ever made. Just leased a new GC and will be trading this in and never looking back. STAY AWAY.
Plus the OEM blades that came with the car were complete crap.
