Cranking:

I decided to stop by the dealer today and check if they had any. Sure enough they did but wanted $15x.xx for it. I mentioned that I had found a lower price online but didn't want to wait for shipping to my surprise they offered to sell it to me for $126. I was really happy with that so I bought it and installed it this afternoon. So for anyone that may dig up this thread searching in the future, 000 915 105 DE fits and works great in a mk2 :thumbup:

Uneven wear:

I had a MK3 GTI VR6 that that happened to. I went thru several e-brake cables. Finally figured out the calipers were steel and they would seize up from rust. I swapped them out for some aluminum ones from a MK4 and the problem was solved forever.

Pros: problem solved forever

Cons: calipers seize up from rust

Overheating:

Regarding our 1997 Jetta GLS that we've had since it was brand-new, I was topping off the original G11 with G12+ since about 2000, without any problems. A few years ago we had the radiator replaced, and the coolant was all changed out to G12 -- that is, the current G12.

Pros: no problems topping off

No leaks:

Verdict: IT WAS THE VALVE COVER. Not the gasket, the cover itself. Mine was cracked a lot and had broken baffles in there. I was sucking all that oil through the VC and into the manifold and into the engine. Dealer replaced the VC and ran the oil consumption test. Perfect. Zero drop in oil and no smoking.

Pros: Zero drop in oil

Cons: cracked, broken baffles

Braking:

Pay attention to the brakes. For what it is worth ... I have a 2010 Routan SE which has been great except for the brakes. I bought the car new and the brakes it came with (rear) lasted 17,000 mi.

Pros: entertainment system worth gold

Cons: brakes lasted short time

Starting:

Ok, So today I cleaned all the grounds then checked them with a multimeter, put new plugs in, changed the ignition coil, and still won't start. It has good spark now, and it's definitely getting fuel.

Pros: good spark, getting fuel

Cons: still won't start

Starting:

After I clear the code the CEL light stays off for about 15-20 miles or 2 cycles and then reappears. It has now been 400 miles since the timing chain work was done - plenty of time for the computer to 'adjust to the new part'. Although the idle has smoothed out a little bit, I'm afraid the car was not properly fixed.

Pros: idle smoothed out a little

Cons: CEL light reappears

Had a Mk4 come in with \"a bad headgasket.\" Unusual repair for a model with a MLS headgasket stock...For the low price of using the wrong coolant the customer either gets to buy a used/reman head or spend big $ fixing this one.

Pros: phosphate free antifreeze good

Cons: wrong coolant expensive
