My enthusiasm vanished after I found a pair of shiny set from VW Up from 2018, at 18€ delivered. Each component has Ate logo, no dirt, pistons in virgin shape, looks like bleeders were not even touched. Stainless guide bolts were greased.
I had driven the first gen Axia for 5 years and I feel its stock brake is decent. Especially after I changed to Myvi lagi best (also stock), I felt Axia's has better stopping power, likely due to its lighter weight. Since then, I was looking for an upgrade for my Myvi. Upgrading to a bigger caliper should increase the braking power, even better if the disk is slotted. I considered this brand before but didn't go with it due to the price. I went with half-cut Honda Odessey/Civic 2-pot which costed only 1/3 and couldn't be happier. Not only it gives me more confidence when braking, also the are quite good-looking.
The 06-07 WRX 4 piston brakes bolt right on and use the stock rotor + brake hose. It will clear stock 17s and 18s. It also does not change brake bias either.
All brake components are already bought.
I put Powerstop calipers on the front when I did the 5th Gen conversion. No complaints with them, they stop much better than before.
I went with Akebonos with two-piece rotors. No complaints here.
There’s two lines, as the caliper is split into two sections vertically. The top two pistons (inside and outside piston, directly across from eachother) are hooked up to one brake line, and the other line hooks up to the bottom chamber and bottom two pistons. If one brake line fails, you still have some brake pressure (the pair of pistons on the non broken line). Unfortunately, this means that only a pair of the 4 pistons will work with just one brake line (all abs cars). This would make your pads wear at a severe angle, and drastically impact your breaking performance. I’d definitely say just find some rebuild kits for your current calipers. It’s pretty easy and cheap.
2018 Tiguan w/181k miles...purchased new. Overall the motor has held up no issues other than wiring harness. I never go beyond 10k miles for oil changes and 80k miles for trans oil. I had to replace a rear brake electronic module and a few months later one of the rear calipers.
Recently i had a 5 month old powerstop caliper leak and my brake pedal hit the floor. No warranty outside 90 days plus there was no availability for ordering another set!
I do not think the calipers are anything special. Just powder coated. I had issues with them (seizing) and replaced with refurbed oem Chrysler. Running the powerstop rotors with EBC Green pads. I would just upgrade pads instead of rotors and calipers If could do it over again.
